	AUTONOMOUS MECHANICS //STUDIO + LAB

[THE WORK OF ELÆ MOSS BENEDETTO]
/ research + development // design + curation // facilitation + advocacy /

	AUTONOMOUS MECHANICS is a research-driven design studio operating across modes of creative work and practice. Using the framework of “lab” as a model for systemic innovation and iteration, it seeks to offer and operationalize speculative possibilities for space, place, body, structure, and biome.
 The AUTONOMOUS MECHANICS studio + lab,
led by Elæ Moss Benedetto, designs and&#38;nbsp;facilitates projects and programs for public and social intervention, including site-specific installation, curation, radical curriculum design and implementation, publication, and collective capacity building via scalable&#38;nbsp;open-source tools and methods.

	praxis&#38;nbsp;//
[noun: the process by which a theory, lesson, or skill is enacted, embodied, realized, applied, or put into practice]
A message from Elæ:&#38;nbsp;

I’ve written a lot about my “work” -- which I often will say is no different from my life, or being as a human on the planet -- much like that of mushroom, bird, or water.&#38;nbsp;

This work takes a lot of forms, and when I write about this work, it’s often for different audiences and contexts. The language and other tools I use in my work can as a result sometimes feel illegible or inaccessible, but this is no different from any other specialized communication -- I can’t speak Japanese, or write any number of programming languages, for instance.

Here, via this studio / lab, my goal is to make this work the most accessible to the most people. These tools are, truly, for everyone -- they’re really derived from studying human systems in relationship to the rest of the ecosystem, and thinking about the ways we become familiar with our bodies and their capacities.

In around 2010, I announced publicly that I’d been working on a project to understand our capacity to auto-evolve, which I called ÆVOLUTION. In 2014, I began asking questions that became workshops and lectures on “HOW TO HUMAN.” This spun out into many projects, resources and tools, including the DISRUPTOR MECHANISM PROTOCOLS and the experimental, open source framework of THE OPERATING SYSTEM and LIMINAL LAB platform.

I’ve come to call the set of Human Technologies I’m interested in helping others think about and come to have an intentional relationship with “AUTONOMOUS MECHANICS” and the process of shifting that way of being “becoming plural,” which is where this studio was born.

Think of me as an eccentric neighbor with a garage full of always-in-process inventions, with an open invitation to all to play and discover. Artist? Sure. Teacher? Sure. Scientist? Hell yes. These are all roles humans have established, claimed, and played as we’ve engaged with curiosity in understanding ourselves and our world.

Not only is the asking of questions (as well as discovering, exploring, documenting and communicating our findings) central to human experience but to our existence and our continued survival. My dream for us is to get back to these basics of purpose on this planet, extracting our possibility and power from the stories and systems that we’re caught up in.&#38;nbsp;

/ research + development&#38;nbsp;/
/ design + curation&#38;nbsp;/
/ facilitation + advocacy&#38;nbsp;/

On this PRAXIS page I seek to offer a deeper understanding of the HOW and WHY of my work. In the world, my practice is often divided into the topic / process areas listed above.

To learn more, check out the ongoing project archive of my work, which&#38;nbsp;lives here.

The Operating System and Liminal Lab, which is a program, resource hub and publication platform I founded, designed, and operate,&#38;nbsp;
lives here.

This PRAXIS page may feel somewhat similar to the [huh?] explainer page, where I try not to use words like... praxis.

ARCHIVE + ACCESS //
PUBLICATION AS PUBLIC ACTIONThe PUBLICATION AS PUBLIC ACTION project considers the print:document as a vital tool for future-history building, inviting local and regional publics into conversation around intentional documentation and dissemination of personal and collective intelligence. This activation / intervention is scaleable and available as an archive or library installation for any sort of cultural organization, and/or can be built to suit for public or outdoor iterations.

Related to precedent FIELD STATION, LIBRARY and LAB projects and to THE OPERATING SYSTEM’s long-running publication experiment (2012-2022), this installation is designed to house an initial “seed library” of already existing volumes, upon which future community materials can build.
PROGRAMMING around PUBLICATION AS PUBLIC ACTION invites individuals, organizations, communities -- any unit of human operation -- to enter work into the archive as an active intervention against top-down accounts of cultural history. Workshops on everything from the physical making of books and zines to modalities for public research and technical advice on creating digital extensions, using distribution networks, and more can be built in for ongoing activation of the site and its growing materials.

These interventions are designed to evolve into ongoing sites of autonomously directed community storytelling, tool-gathering, intelligence collection, and connection-building. Included with the toolkit are autonomous materials for the development and publication of books and objects&#38;nbsp;which can then be added to this collection as well as instructions for the design and building of autonomous pop-up sites using this model.

CURRENT INTERVENTION SITE (2023-24):
	CROSSETT LIBRARY, BENNINGTON COLLEGE, BENNINGTON VT

For the PUBLICATION AS PUBLIC ACTION installation in Crossett Library at Bennington College, a corner of the library is reimagined as a dynamic space for engagement with the possibility of autonomous documentation, drawing the eye upon approach with bright pops of color and vegetal collaboration.
 Library visitors are invited to engage with texts and materials produced using the AUTONOMOUS MECHANICS open publication protocols, tools for imagining the possibility of PUBLICATION as PUBLIC ACTION as well as archival volumes from The Operating System
The intervention is active across numerous temporalities: from short visits exploring the display-only volumes, extended borrowing of titles and materials in circulation, to the use of on-site prompts for non-linear bibliomancy, as well as invitational materials for DIY publication.
These tools for community engagement are provided digitally via QR code access, as well as in the form of worksheets and zines available at the library site. Students, faculty, campus workers and members of the larger local and regional community are encouraged to use the open source protocols to develop print:document publications, with the potential for satellite sites and partner organization pop-ups.
Related coursework offered for the Bennington community includes Future Histories, Speculative Sites 1 (F22) &#38;amp; 2 / Year One:Seed Lab (S23), Archive + Access: Publication, Pedagogy + Mutual Aid as Public Action (F23), and Year One: Social Practice as Public Action (S24).
Related YEAR ONE &#124; SEED LAB “Spring into Action” Zine + Public Action Fairs were held at the Left Bank Gallery in North Bennington in the Spring of 2023; project zines from students and collaborators are now available as a Left Bank Open Resource Library and Zine Exchange -- add one using this form! Zines will be added to the OS Open Access Library for public use, access, and distribution.

ARCHIVE + ACCESS // SITES&#38;nbsp;+&#38;nbsp;SOUNDS&#38;nbsp;Under the ARCHIVE + ACCESS umbrella we find all sorts of project frameworks that consider the ways in which we make, document, save, share, distribute, and become aware of human meaning-making.&#38;nbsp;
SITES + SOUNDS is at its core a decentralized framework for community archiving, which rethinks the ways we map and experience place and its stories.&#38;nbsp;

This exciting project considers the ways in which humans have always made meaning in and with place, and invites the public to inscribe their experience into the landscape, which then become part of a digital platform linking these commons-generated audio walking tours with ecological, historical, somatic, speculative, and other content.

On the ground, installation and intervention&#38;nbsp;take a variety of forms, including site-specific, geolocated sound materials and signage with digital extensions.A centralized mobile / digital app-based site (working with Echoes’ spatial audio programming elements.)&#38;nbsp;

Like all AUTONOMOUS MECHANICS offerings, SITES + SOUNDS is designed to scale and be operational in a wide range of settings, with implementation possibilities from the most personal / DIY through progammatic and/or archival interventions for municipalities, organizations, communities, etc.&#38;nbsp;

Operationally, SITES + SOUNDS uses everyday materials, and when fully rolled out will both offer and invite signage blueprints for DIY construction and/or production through local or virtually accessible sign shops.

&#60;img width="1138" height="798" width_o="1138" height_o="798" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/e09e931ae62963e5116081e8254727c3d37643c77fee96eb49e23a5fcd4db7f7/sites-and-sounds_web_moss.png" data-mid="198427686" border="0" data-scale="65" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/e09e931ae62963e5116081e8254727c3d37643c77fee96eb49e23a5fcd4db7f7/sites-and-sounds_web_moss.png" /&#62;

What does this look like on the ground? Here’s some examples:&#38;nbsp;
SITE 1: PERSONAL: A family wants to mark the passing of an elder, so they look at the options and choose a sign type that makes sense for their SITE -- maybe under a tree this elder loved -- and they select a SOUND, perhaps a voicemail they left a grandchild -- and upload this sound to the app. They make the sign following the instructions, and when others pass the tree they can listen via QR code, or through the app, from anywhere in the world.

SITE 2: CREATIVE, ie: BLACK HOLE HOLLOW: Choreographers working with a site-specific dance mark this SITE for public intervention by recording prompts, leaving a SOUND “score” of types for others to engage with, suggesting movement others can experiment with. Again -- those on the site itself can interact with the sign on which the QR code is placed, or engage via the digital resources.

SITE 3: COLLECTIVE, ie: BENNINGTON COLLEGE: At the organizational or community level -- a town, school, faith community, library, or any collective entity -- this infrastructure can be brought in to assist in short term or permament projects that engage with the physical site. At Bennington, this looks like an intervention that invites students, faculty, staff, and other community members to create sound-based signage to activate experiences on and around campus and its grounds, informed by historical, ecological, personal, creative, and speculative content.&#38;nbsp;

Some logistics and operational notes:

Organizational projects can be facilitated by an Autonomous Mechanics Field Agent or by Elæ Moss in a consultancy, visiting artist or other similar capacity. In these instances, the project can follow any conventions or limitations necessary for public signage, and/or specifications as to where signs are possible -- and, potentially, can create a new, site / organization specific visual language to create cohesion for that specific project / location.The signs themselves will take a variety of forms. First, there will be a number of larger informative signs about the project at strategic “entry” points from which walkers can navigate the “trails” of audio content. Trailmarkers / project audio elements are designed to be seamless with the environment, and will follow one of a number of standard park / trail type signage designs. (see below)

BACKGROUND and RELATED MEDIA:&#38;nbsp;

&#60;img width="1265" height="889" width_o="1265" height_o="889" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/b9fd1d9c3f20536240e8a61d4589bb5a7617696f8f4c718491c99bdfbec778e0/decomp_web_moss.png" data-mid="198427688" border="0" data-scale="79" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/b9fd1d9c3f20536240e8a61d4589bb5a7617696f8f4c718491c99bdfbec778e0/decomp_web_moss.png" /&#62;
This project has nearly a decade of performance, research, and writing behind it. Components across media have been presented and published under a variety of related project titles, as well. Research and performance elements with early infrastructure for the site-specific audio platform were presented by myself and one collaborator, composer / musician Stanford Cheung, in January 2022 as part of the New Mimesis: Simulation, Models, Metaphors and Data in Music symposium hosted by the Orpheus Institute (Ghent), WinterSound, and the CISA Research Unit at Canterbury Christ Church (Kent, UK). As part of the public Speculative Solidarities offerings&#38;nbsp;in conjunction with the ARCHIVE + ACCESS and YEAR ONE projects (in Crossett Library and the Center for the Advancement of Public Action / CAPA, respectively), SITES + SOUNDS is being activated on the Bennington College campus during the 2023-24 academic year, as well as popping up elements in collaboration with local partners. Concurrently to the Bennington iteration a SITES + SOUNDS installation is emerging at Black Hole Hollow as part of a durational residency; in North Bennington collaborators include Jennie Rozycki at the McCullough Free Library and Rhonda Ratray at Left Bank (as well as with other partners in the US and abroad).

The YEAR ONE project exists under the larger SPECULATIVE SOLIDARITIES/ umbrella of activations, protocols, and related programming. When brought to an organization, public space, community site or institution it can be built as a temporary, mobile, or iterative structure (shipping container, dome, tent,etc) or installed in an existing building or structure, even in an otherwise transitory space.&#38;nbsp;

YEAR ONE HUBS + LABS are autonomous spaces for communities to build / practice / envision / study the ways in which human may need to find themselves practicing / providing&#38;nbsp;collective care, resource sharing, research, and other interpersonal services as our relationship to and reliance on institutions shifts.&#38;nbsp;

This project / initiative is OPEN SOURCE and can be facilitated by Autonomous Mechanics / Elæ Moss and/or built by and in community with attribution using the tools and protocols available here. It is designed to be scalar based on the capacities of partner sites, and can be offered as part of programming and/or curriculum, with workshops, skillshares, performance, courses, etc.&#38;nbsp;

Learn more about the conceptual grounding of this project on my artist’s archive site.

 PRECEDENT PROJECTS: It its physical, iterative Field Station / HUB / Seed Lab form, YEAR ONE includes elements of my earlier Speculative Seed Library project (2019-ongoing), the Speculative Resilience Radical Practice Library and Lab (2018-ongoing), Open Field Work Protocol elements (2016 - ongoing), Future Form (2013-ongoing) and so on.&#38;nbsp;

HISTORY / RECOGNITION: YEAR ONE grew out of a 2021 proposal for open source resilient system and tool building which went on to the semifinals for consideration for the David Prize in NYC. The project’s next iteration was proposed as a set of blueprints, tools and a full model build of a YEAR ONE HUB, which was shortlisted for a Creative Time award in 2022. The project has been supported by a solo residency at Some Serious Business in Abiquiu, New Mexico (2022), a Public Action Fellowship at Bennington College (2022-24), and the Woodbury Art in the Public Realm Grant (2023).&#38;nbsp;

		<description>PEDAGOGY&#38;nbsp;AS PUBLIC ACTIONThe PEDAGOGY AS PUBLIC ACTION project is designed to extend the work of rank and file educators beyond institutions into the greater public field as well as into the archive. It demonstrates, makes space for, and invites participation in the act of tool and resource building outside the classroom. At its heart is a dedication to access for all to the materials and methodologies that are often gatekept within academic or disciplinary silos, and to freeing the work of dedicated educators.&#38;nbsp;

PROGRAMMING around PEDAGOGY AS PUBLIC ACTION includes workshops (single or repeating) for educators, researchers, and other facilitators designed to assist in the development of the necessary skills for translating research, curriculum, and creative practice into open tools, prompts, resources, and guidelines for self-and-collective peer-led learning spaces.
Examples of training areas include writing, organization, design, documentation, print and dissemination strategies -- as well as workshops for practitioners seeking to translate their work into teachable / shareable methods and materials.

For organizations or sites simultaneously hosting a PUBLICATION AS PUBLIC ACTION installation, print materials from these programs can join the collection of resources growing under that aegis.

THE GAZA&#38;nbsp;MONO-LOGUES
 A PEOPLE’s MIC PUBLIC INTERVENTION
IN COLLABORATION with ASHTAR THEATRE, RAMALLAH, PALESTINE

MIC CHECK!
As an act of Global Solidarity with the people of Palestine, Autonomous Mechanics Studio is honored to have the support of Ashtar Theatre in Ramallah for a People’s Mic Collective Intervention of their vital GAZA MONO-LOGUES project.

For more on the history of Ashtar Theatre’s GAZA MONO-LOGUES and the call for performances of this work on November 29th, 2023, The International Day of Solidarity with Palestinian People, see right (browser) or below (mobile).&#38;nbsp;

Update:Following the Day of Solidarity (during which there was participation in over 40 countries) Ashtar Theatre has called for continuous production and amplification of the&#38;nbsp;GAZA MONO-LOGUES as well as continued translation from the international community. You are invited to join a growing Whatsapp Community around the project, to assist in translation efforts, and to support Ashtar’s critical psycho-social programs. See information on how to give to Ashtar in the ABOUT section and find more on all of these ways to engage on their IG account.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE in A PEOPLE’s MIC GAZA MONO-LOGUES:
When we use the people’s mic as a protest tool, the voice of a speaker is amplified via the people, as the echo of the crowd carries their words.&#38;nbsp;
 Sometimes we use the people’s mic to get around the ways our voices are being silenced and our presence and resistance repressed -- when loudspeakers or megaphones is not allowed, or when we have not been given a permit for our protest.

In this way, it can become a symbol for all the ways we speak up for and amplify each others voices, especially when those voices are being systemically censored or erased.&#38;nbsp;

Here, we take up a symbolic “people’s mic” to spread visibility of and engagement in Ashtar Theatre’s GAZA MONO-LOGUES project, by taking the invitation to the theatre of everyday life: by asking the public to read and record a monologue on November 29th, 2023, on the International Day of Solidarity, and to post and share your monologue via whatever platforms or channels you have.

This extends the call to all people, of any age, of any background -- you don’t have to be an artist, an actor, a poet, to use the people’s mic to amplify the voices of the GAZA MONO-LOGUES.&#38;nbsp;

While it’s exciting to see the project being supported by theatre companies and collections of performers around the globe, this call is one that celebrates all the ways in which change-work asks us to let go of our attachment to perfection, hierarchy, and mastery -- art is for all of us, resistance is for all of us, the people’s mic is for all of us. And no one is free until everyone is free -- change-work is for all of us to do, in all its forms.&#38;nbsp;

----------------------------------------------------

GUIDELINES:&#38;nbsp;

- Record video of your reading or performing one or more of the GAZA MONO-LOGUES in any number of the languages available, using the text on the Ashtar Theatre website.&#38;nbsp;

- Post your video on November 29, 2023 (if possible).

- Add and/or read information about / attribution for the project from the Ashtar Theatre website and this site -- including the NAME and AGE of the monologue’s writer where given.

- Find an IMAGE of the monologue’s writer here and an update on their 2023 status here to add to your post. This project is a very personal one -- it makes a difference when we can name and picture those who wrote these words, and share their faces and stories publicly, to counter the continued, widespread dehumanization of Palestinians.

- Add the following hashtags #AshtarTheatre #GazaMonologues #PeoplesMic and tag @AshtarTheatre and @thetroublewithbartleby on Instagram or @imaginaldisco on TikTok so that we can reshare and archive your recording.&#38;nbsp;

- Note: There are back-up files of the texts as well as new additional monologues, and other information in this google drive folder.
----------------------------------------------------

FAQ / NOTES / RESOURCES:

- What if I don’t have social media?&#38;nbsp;

If you don’t have media platforms on which to post, we can upload media on your behalf. Please use this form to upload your information and media. You can make a video on your phone or computer, or make an audio file which we can attach to a tile for the project.&#38;nbsp;

- It’s unsafe for me to post publicly, can I still participate?

	ABOUT THE GAZA MONO-LOGUES:

The GAZA MONO-LOGUES is a collection of personal stories from a group of children in Gaza originally produced by Ashtar Theatre in Ramallah, Palestine, first performed worldwide in 2010, following the violence in the Gaza Strip in 2008-2009.&#38;nbsp;

A performance by 30 international youth in different languages was staged at the UN in New York on November 29th, 2010 - the UN’s International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People.

Following bouts of violence in 2014 and now again in 2023, Ashtar Theatre calls on global participants of all ages -- from the theatre community and beyond -- to participate in the reading and sharing of these stories on this year’s International Day of Solidarity.&#38;nbsp;

Read more about the history of the project here, on the Ashtar Theatre website.

SUPPORT ASHTAR’s IMPORTANT WORK!

The Ashtar Theatre team has generously made these Monologues available free of charge in the interest of public solidarity and visibility, allowing people everywhere to bear witness to the voices of Gaza -- however, they are very much in need (and deserving) of support.

In substitute of copyrights purchase of the Gaza Monologues, please support Ashtar’s psycho-social program in the West Bank via Global Giving!
